If you ever find yourself in Berlin, you’ll soon realise that there are more museums in that city than you could have imagined!
There are history museums, Berlin Wall museums, War museums, DDR museums, and many, many more. There’s even a Museum Island where you’ll find 5 museums to visit.
And a lot of them are really interesting and shouldn’t be missed.
But there’s one that’s a little different from almost all the other museums in Berlin. It’s the Ramones Museum. That’s right. A museum dedicated to the famous American punk group – the Ramones.
A bit of band history
The Ramones formed in New York in 1974. The guys in the band weren’t related at all, but they all adopted the surname ‘Ramone’ – hence the Ramones.
The Ramones played continually for 22 years, until, in 1996, they played one final concert, and then went their separate ways.
All four of the original band members have since died. For a much more in-depth story about the Ramones (if you don’t already know about them), take a look here.
The museum is in two parts. From the entrance, you first walk into the café. You can buy a drink (hot or cold) and a cake, and sit in the café surrounded by Ramones’ (and other rock stars’) memorabilia. This part is free, and you can spend all day in the café if you want and pay for nothing except your drinks and cakes.
Then you can go into the actual museum. There’s an entry fee, and it’s quite cheap. You have 3 options.
1 4.50 euros and you get entry and a Ramones pin (which, if you keep it and show it the next time you visit the museum, you get free entry!)
2 6.00 euros and you get entry, the pin, and a drink of your choice. We chose beer, but you can get a tea or coffee if you prefer
3 24.00 euros and you get entry, the pin and a t-shirt
Not a bad deal, really. So, we paid 6.00 euros and got the pin and the beer. And then off we went into the museum, clutching our beers, ready for the exhibition.
As you enter, you’re immediately surrounded by all things Ramones! Clothes, records, posters, and even furniture, that were once owned by some of the Ramones band members.
You can read about the Ramones in different texts placed around the room. You can watch documentaries about them. There’s letters, photos, musical instruments and much, much more on display!
It’s only a small museum, but you could easily spend hours in there if you wanted to examine everything very closely and read everything. Oh, and don’t forget the cinema where you can watch documentaries non-stop.
Even for non-fans (like me) it’s still a really interesting place to visit and an inexpensive way to spend an hour or so of your time.
This museum is open every day of the year, 10.00 – 22.00, so you don’t have to worry about public holidays or anything. Just get yourself to Berlin and go!
