I don’t know how many records I’ve ‘lost’, vinyls or CDs, and even cassettes, by lending them to my ‘friends’, but I’ve lost a lot.
If you also lent people your records, you’ll see what I’m talking about, right?
Albums that I really cared about, which were sometimes almost impossible to find again!
So one day, I decided it was over. I’ll no longer lend my records to people! Except that my heart is too soft, so much so that I could never say ‘no’, and therefore never stopped and therefore continued to lose my music.
As I used to like having friends visit me at home, (I still like that but I don’t have any more records as I explain here), I often had parties at home. Rock ’n’ roll parties where the alcohol flowed and the music rung in our heads, and those of my neighbours, until the early hours. And since I had a significant amount of punk-rock vinyl (but not only), my visitors often asked me to lend them this or that disc, just for a short time so that they could copy it to a cassette.
Of course, I hesitated a few seconds before I made them promise to give it back to me as soon as they’d recorded it. And they promised! All of them! However, how many of them kept their promise? Not all of them, unfortunately.
Buying them a second time
So after a while, when I realized that I would never see my records again, I bought some of them again. This was the case with the first album of “Garçons Bouchers”, one of my favorite albums, and not just mine!
I’ve had 3 of this album! Two on vinyl and one on CD. And today? Zero. Is it because I sold it at the same time as my other records? No. I lent this album 3 times! And I don’t even know who borrowed them from me. If it’s one of you, dear readers, then you are one of 3 scoundrels! But I don’t hold it against you. Nobody forced me to lend my records, after all!
If only the list stopped at these 3 discs, I’d be happy. Unfortunately, the list is a bit longer.
And also, if only this story dates back to those years when we lent our vinyl records to our friends so that they could make copies on cassettes, I’d be happy once again. But no! I have a story like this that dates back only two years. When I decided to sell my vinyl collection.
20 albums and almost as many 45s taken at the same time, and by a single friend! And who however is still my friend and whom I still meet from time to time in Moscow. I even drink with him! I told you that I have a soft heart.
The latest story
But I must explain to you the circumstances of this situation. I caught up with this Russian friend in Paris, and he offered to take care of reselling some of my records in Russia.
Why not, I thought. It’s true that even if I’d already sold a large part of my vinyls, I still had quite a few left. And the idea was good because it would make Russian rockers happy.
So I let this friend choose from my records the ones that he thought he could sell to his friends in Moscow or Saint Petersburg. Yes, apart from these two cities, it seems difficult to find customers, even if there are many rock bands and concerts all over Russia.
The day after his return to Moscow, he contacted me to announce that he had found a buyer for the first album of Madness (One Step Beyond).
Twenty euro for the album. Not bad for the price, so of course he sold it and he gave me the money some time later.
And then nothing! No more news from my friend for several weeks. But nothing abnormal because Moscow is a big city and he and I have our occupations and sometimes we don’t see each other for a long time. So I let some time pass. But after more than two months without news from my ‘partner’, I contacted him to find out where our business was. He gave me the reason for this prolonged silence by explaining that I risked never seeing my records again, nor the money that their sales should have brought me! Ah the scammer!
You wonder why I will never see my records again, huh?
– Because of a fire? No.
– Because of the customs officials who didn’t let him enter Russia with this evil music? Again no.
– Because of a burglary at his place? Still no.
– Because of love? You guessed. Well done !!!
And yes, because of LOVE, of course ! This feeling so strong and so pleasant when everything is fine – and so crazy and so bad when everything is bad. And for this young man, who is quite a handsome boy and who loves pretty girls, his love story with his Princess (that’s what he called her at the beginning) ended in shit. You will say to me, “What does that have to do with your records?” Well, it turns out that he had stored all my discs with his Princess (who he now calls the Demon) and since their separation, she refuses to return them to him. And I’d only met this ‘Demon’ once and I don’t even know what her name is in real life. So I don’t see how to ask her to give me back my records, especially because she seems so scary!
So once again I ‘lent’ my records, a large amount of them, and I can’t get them back. Unless my friend gets back with this girl? Yep, it looks bad. And despite everything, I’m always happy to see him and we continue our friendship as if nothing had happened. I know what you think. You say to yourself: “Olivier’s an idiot. If it was me, I wouldn’t talk to this guy anymore, and I would either force him to reimburse me or give me back my records”. So I’ll tell you something, I told him about it a few days ago, and he told me he was going to see what he could do. So there is still hope …
However, I still have a few vinyl records in Paris and I am sure that if you asked me to lend you one or two I wouldn’t refuse. So try your luck in the comments! Or leave your stories on this topic.
