The idea for Never Mind the Wrinkles blog was born on a snowy winter’s night in Munich, Germany. We’d been in Stuttgart the night before for a concert, and had travelled to Munich that day to go to another concert. The same group. You may know them – Demented Are Go.
We’d had a pretty heavy night in Stuttgart. Lots of beers. Loud music. Fun. And not much sleep. So, you can imagine we were pretty tired the following evening when arrived at the concert in Munich.
But, after a few beers and chatting with friends we managed to find some energy and enjoyed another great concert. We spent some time with the guys from DAG after the concert, and made some new friends in the support band (who played with DAG in both Stuttgart and Munich), King Moroi, a German band.
At the end of the night, we were among the last ones to leave the venue (as usual), and consequently missed the last metro back to our hotel. So we asked a passer-by for directions to our hotel, and started walking.
It was about 2.00am. It was snowing. We were full of beer. We were happy but tired.
We were talking about the two concerts we’d just been to, our time in Germany, and how much fun we were having. And we agreed that we’re not so young anymore. Two concerts in a row, late nights, travelling, and lots of beer. We were both exhausted.
And we had to be up at 5.00am to go to the airport.
Ian Dury
If you’re of a certain age, and you probably are if you’re reading this, you will remember Ian Dury and the Blockheads, an English band quite famous in the ‘80s. One of his legendary songs was ‘Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll’. Remember it?
As we were walking back to our hotel, knowing that we were only going to have about 2 hours sleep, we discussed how, at our advanced age, we can no longer live up to the words of the song. It was now a question of ‘or’ instead of ‘and’. Meaning – Sex or Drugs or Rock & Roll – only one at a time, not all three together. No can do.
We definitely can’t manage all three like we used to when we were young. Even though we try.
So, walking in the snow, laughing at how old we are now, reminiscing about our pasts and how much energy we used to have to do anything we wanted, we decided that ‘Sex or Drugs or Rock & Roll’ would be a good name for a blog. A blog for people who are getting older, but not getting old. People who can no longer do everything they used to, but are still trying!
A blog for people like us who love concerts, drinking, having parties and staying out all night. People who don’t want to turn into their grandparents (even though I’m sure you all have/had wonderful grandparents).
After a lot of discussion when we got back home to Moscow, we decided on the name ‘Never Mind the Wrinkles’ for our new blog. But we still embrace Sex or Drugs or Rock & Roll as our motto, especially since I, Cheryl, was privileged to meet Ian Dury in Perth, Australia, in 1981, when I was just 14 years old. I’ve written about this amazing event in this post.
So, this blog is a celebration of those of us who are getting old, but not ‘aging’. Or, rather, we’re fighting the changes that life, and age, is forcing on us. Wrinkles being one of those changes, although there are many, many more.
At Never Mind the Wrinkles we will share with you:
– our own personal stories of us trying to recapture our youth (or ignoring the advanced years)
– interviews with oldies (click on ‘Talk’ in the menu – so you know that you’re not alone)
– health issues (although we’re not doctors we’ll discuss some common ailments we are confronted with, and suffering from, as we get older)
– photos of concerts, life, travel, friends and more
